If You Have Contracted Pancreatitis, Contact a Byetta Attorney Immediately

Byetta Attorneys Criticize Drug Makers For Inadequate Warning Labels

Pancreatitis is a troubling illness that varies in severity but, as a Byetta attorney will attest (as the drug has been linked to the condition), it is often serious enough to qualify victims for recompense. It typically requires hospitalization for treatment, including pain management and fluid and electrolyte stabilization. In some cases, surgery or other invasive measures may be necessary. Additionally, there are sometimes related complications such as the development of pseudocysts that can become infected and hemorrhage.

The drug is manufactured and marketed by Amylin Pharmaceuticals, along with Eli Lilly and Company. Recently, consumer watchdogs, doctors, and lawyers have criticized the company for not warning consumers about potentially devastating adverse effects. Though not as serious, more common ones include:

  • Loss of appetite

  • Weight loss

  • Heartburn

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Dizziness

  • Headache

  • Feeling jittery

  • Diarrhea

  • Rash at the injection site

All of these complications aside, the most dangerous issue is pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas. The symptoms typically reported by a victim and their Byetta attorney are acute, appearing suddenly. Intense upper abdominal pain that radiates throughout the body is common, as is the associated nausea and vomiting. In some cases, internal bleeding, extreme changes in blood pressure, and altered heart and respiratory rates begin immediately. Most cases of exenatide ailments are identified through a computed tomography, or CT scan.

In 2007, the FDA began requiring the two pharmaceutical giants to create additional warning labels on the medication after at least 30 reports of the life-threatening malady were connected to the medication. Since that requirement took effect, there have been several victims that have contacted a Byetta attorney, and the FDA is reportedly considering more changes to warning labels, to include the possibility of bleeding and cell death.

Without immediate treatment, victims may quickly develop some of the following painful medical conditions.

  • Shock

  • Low calcium

  • High blood sugar

  • Dehydration

  • Kidney failure

  • Respiratory complications

  • Systemic inflammatory response syndrome

  • Infection of the organ bed

Patients should always consult with a doctor before discontinuing any medication. However, if you were hospitalized after using the drug, you may want to seek out a Byetta attorney as well. There are already lawsuits pending against the manufacturers, claiming that they failed to adequately warn consumers about the potential risks, and seeking compensation for the costs associated with healthcare, lost wages, and general pain and suffering. The families of victims who tragically died may also want to consider pursuing wrongful death suits on behalf of their loved ones.

The drug is a synthetic version of a hormone found in the saliva of the Gila monster, a type of venomous lizard that lives in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Its effectiveness is attributed to the fact that the lizard’s hormone is very similar to glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), a hormone that is found in the human digestive track that can increase insulin production when blood sugar levels are too high.

The manufacturers are also in the process of developing a longer-acting version of the medication. Given concerns over the potential problems associated with the current formula, the FDA will likely require a longer-term study of any newly developed drug. If the Byetta drug  does cause damage to the pancreas, a formulation with a longer half-life will simply remain in the body longer and potentially cause even more injury.
