Third Generation Contraceptives Such As Nuvaring Have Cardiovascular Complications
Millions of women have received prescriptions for and have used the birth control device known as NuvaRing since its introduction in 2002. The contraceptive gained popularity to due its perceived convenience, as it does not require daily dosing like most birth control pills.
NuvaRing birth control is a flexible, transparent ring which is inserted into the vagina. The ring, which is left in place for three weeks, releases a continual dose of two hormones, estrogen and a synthetic form of progestin, which are absorbed into the vaginal wall, and subsequently into the bloodstream. The hormones work to suppress ovulation and thus prevent pregnancy. Unfortunately, this type of combined hormonal contraceptive, known as a “third-generation contraceptive,” has been associated with a high risk of potentially deadly blood clots and other serious side effects in users.
The type of synthetic progestin in third-generation contraceptives, including NuvaRing birth control, is known as desogestrel. Independent studies dating back as far as 1995 indicate that contraceptives which use hormone combinations containing desogestrel carry a twofold risk of blood clots when compared to older forms of birth control. Moreover, these third-generation contraceptives offer no added protection against pregnancy.
The FDA was petitioned in March 2007 by a non-profit consumer advocacy group to remove all third-generation contraceptives from the market, including NuvaRing. However, no such ban or recall has been issued. The risk of serious and sometimes deadly side effects tied to use of NuvaRing birth control include:
• Deep vein thrombosis. DVT is a blood clot originating in a deep vein, usually in the leg. Symptoms of this condition include pain or swelling in the lower leg or lower abdomen.
• Pulmonary Embolism. PE is a blood clot in the lung. Warning signs may include sharp chest pain or heavy/crushing chest pain, and difficulty breathing.
• Stroke. This may be indicated by sudden changes in speech and/or vision, weakness or numbness in an arm or leg, or severe headache.
• Blood clot of the eye. Symptoms may include sudden loss of vision, blurring or other changes.
• Heart Attack. Warning signs of a heart attack may also include chest pain or heaviness.
• Toxic Shock Syndrome. Symptoms include high fever, vomiting, rash, and headaches. If you experience these symptoms while using NuvaRing birth control, you should seek immediate medical attention.
As consumers have been made aware of the link between use of this contraceptive and the health complications it may cause, a growing number of lawsuits have been filed against pharmaceutical maker Organon, a division of Shering Plough Corporation. Attorneys for these women and their survivors have argued that this birth control device has been the cause of many deaths, and even more injuries and long-term disabilities. These lawsuits may result in the recovery of financial compensation for those who have suffered losses or injuries, and may provide for needed long-term medical care.
