YAZ Attorneys Launch Litigation Against Birth Control Manufacturers

FDA Says Over 50 Reports Of Fatalities Related To YAZ Birth Control

Lawsuits are mounting against the pharmaceutical giant Bayer, based upon allegations of severe injuries caused by their contraceptive pills. YAZ attorneys have filed a number of these claims on behalf of the women who have suffered potentially life-threatening side effects.

For those who have been injured by Yasmin or its newer, lower-dose counter part YAZ, attorneys have been able to provide the legal guidance required for seeking financial compensation. These birth control lawsuits contain allegations that the warning information provided with the pills is inadequate, as it does not explain the risks of the most serious potential adverse effects. Reports have surfaced indicating that women have suffered from a variety of effects, including:

• Heart attacks
• Strokes
• Gallbladder disease
• Deep vein thrombosis
• Pulmonary embolism

In fact, these conditions could even result in death. There have been over 50 reports to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of fatalities related to the pills, including victims as young as 17 years old.

Yasmin is an oral contraceptive that contains drospirenone, a new synthetic variety of progestin that is not used in any other contraceptive approved in the United States. A study published in the British Medical Journal suggested that using medications that include this hormone could as much as double the risk of blood clots. It may also increases potassium levels and result in a condition known as hyperkalemia, which has been known to disrupt heart rhythms.

The FDA has warned that some of Bayer’s advertisements for the drugs were misleading, making exaggerated claims about benefits while downplaying or failing to mention important adverse effects. As a result, their products became the biggest-selling contraceptives worldwide, bringing in over $1.5 billion in the first quarter they were released.

The company subsequently agreed to spend $20 million on a corrective marketing campaign. However, this may have been too late for the many users who were unaware that they were possibly taking unsafe drugs. YAZ attorneys have filed claims not only based on injury caused by the products, but also charging Bayer with fraud, breach of warranty, negligent failure to warm, and negligent misrepresentation.

A number of these federal suits may be consolidated, centralizing them into one court for the purpose of coordinating pretrial proceedings. There are a number of different lawyers representing plaintiffs who were harmed by Yasmin, and consolidation will help avoid inconsistent pretrial rulings and repetitious discovery. It would also limit the possibility for inconvenience to these plaintiffs who have already been through a great deal.

At least one case also names the drugstore Walgreens as a defendant, alleging that in selling the pills, the store impliedly warranted that they were safe for use. The woman who purchased them there experienced a blood clot in her lung, as well as an infection surrounding that clot.

Women who have used any form of contraception that includes drospirenone should consult a doctor immediately upon any negative health changes. If you or someone you know has been harmed due to false promises in the misleading advertising campaign, the LegalTube directory will be able to help you find the YAZ birth control lawyer that you need.
